Ultimately, my work is about honoring personal feelings and exploring themes found in psychology and Buddhism such as subjective communication, awareness, and consciousness. I create a personal language of meaning and metaphor from the poetics of the way ink bleeds, steel bends, and wood connects. I am drawn to using materials “as they are” allowing exploration to be immediate, present, and imperfect. Discoveries emerge from the act of making with my hands while observing both my mind and body. Eventually the pieces take on qualities resonant with an emotion or idea achieved through a flow state. Even when my work moves from abstract to referential, it reflects an ongoing relationship with feelings and materials over time.

In my most recent work with ink on paper, I relinquish control by letting ink run and reducing the limits I place on myself. Within a single drawing, the work softens my thinking and grounds me to somatic experience and the present moment. Silhouettes, archetypal symbols, and shapes allow me to create unique encounters on paper. My drawings are, to me, gateways to new perspectives. They are also an offering to the viewer to explore their own perspectives, potentials, and opportunities.
